Straight stairlift: did anyone regret buying one? Need honest advice (5 อ่าน)

Hi everyone,

I’m new here, so sorry if this has been asked before. I’ve been searching for days and still can’t get a clear answer: what is a straight stairlift, and is it the right choice for my situation?

Here’s the background. My dad is 72 and has weak knees. Our house has one long, straight staircase with 14 steps and no turns. Lately he avoids going upstairs and has even started sleeping on the couch. That’s not good for his back or his mood. We want him back in his own bedroom without the risk of a fall.

From what I understand, a straight stairlift is a chair that rides on a rail fixed to the stairs and travels up and down in a straight line. It’s different from a curved stairlift, which is built for stairs with turns or landings. Is that right? Since our stairs are straight, I’m guessing this is the simpler and cheaper option, but I’d like to hear from real users.

While reading, I also came across the term medical lift chair, and now I’m more confused. As far as I can tell, a medical lift chair is a recliner that tilts forward to help someone stand up, and it doesn’t take you between floors. Can someone confirm? We may actually need both: a lift chair in the living room and a stairlift for the stairs.

Here are my questions:

Staircase width: Ours is about 36 inches wide. Will there still be room for others to walk up and down once the rail is fitted?

Lift chair installation: Can a handy person do it, or should a professional always handle it? How long did it take for you?

Weight capacity: My dad weighs around 130 kg. Do I need a Heavy Duty Lift model? What weight limits did you see, and did the heavier models feel stable?

Power cuts: Does the stairlift keep working on battery?

Comfort and noise: Is it quiet? Is it comfortable for someone with stiff joints?

Hidden costs: What should I watch for? Rail length, delivery, warranty, service visits?

Safety features: Are seat belts, swivel seats, and folding rails worth paying extra for?

I did some browsing and came across ACG Medical Supply while comparing options. They seem to carry mobility products, but I haven’t bought anything yet and I’d like to hear from people before talking to any seller. If you’ve used them or a similar supplier, I’d love to hear how it went, good or bad.

Also, if you know what to ask during a home measurement visit, please share. I don’t want to buy the wrong thing and regret it later. My biggest worry is picking a model that looks fine online but doesn’t fit our stairs or handle my dad’s weight properly.

Any advice, photos of your setup, or even warnings would help a lot. Thank you so much in advance!
