Runes are an ancient and significant script that emerged among the Germanic tribes of Europe during the early centuries of the Common Era. These symbols were more than just a Elder Futhark; they were deeply intertwined with the culture, spirituality, and worldview of the societies that used them. The history of runes is not only a tale of linguistic evolution but also a story of mysticism, belief, and the interconnectedness of language and culture. The earliest known runic inscriptions date back to around the 2nd century AD, primarily found in regions that are now part of Scandinavia, Germany, and the Netherlands. The script is thought to have been influenced by the Etruscan alphabet, which itself was derived from the Greek alphabet. The runes were used by the early Germanic people as a means of communication, but they also carried a profound symbolic meaning. The first runic alphabet, known as the Elder Futhark, was made up of 24 characters and was used from the 2nd to the 8th centuries AD.
The Elder Futhark was the foundation of the Germanic writing system. Each rune represented a sound, but it also had a symbolic meaning. For example, the rune Fehu (ᚠ), the first rune of the alphabet, symbolized wealth and cattle, essential for survival during the early centuries. The runes were used for a variety of purposes, including inscriptions on weapons, tombstones, and everyday objects. They were not only functional but also carried a sense of mystery and power, often associated with magic and divination. As time passed, the Elder Futhark evolved into regional variants. The most notable of these was the Younger Futhark, which emerged around the 9th century and was used primarily by the Norse during the Viking Age. The Younger Futhark contained only 16 runes, as it was adapted to reflect the changing sounds of the Old Norse language. Despite this simplification, the Younger Futhark retained the symbolic power of the Elder Futhark, continuing to serve as a tool for both communication and magic.
